Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh and the Jamia Millia Islamia are two institutions with which the third President of the Republic of India, Dr. Zakir Husain, was closely associated throughout his life. He was a distinguished scholar holding doctorate degree of Agro-Economics from one of the most prestigious universities of the world – Humboldt University, Berlin. He was true disciple of the father of the nation – Mahatma Gandhi. He was a sincere friend of our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru – Architect of Modern India. He was elected as the third President of India under the dynamic leadership of Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India.

The Duty Society, AMU, a voluntary organization established in 1889, which is more than a century old, has played very important and pioneering role in establishment and expansion of AMU. Zakir Sahib had always a special relationship with this organization. To pay its humble tribute to his valuable services to the Society, the current functionaries and life members of this society have instituted an award in the memory of Zakir Sahib to be given to a scientist of international reputation and standing for his valuable contribution in promoting the teaching and research of applications of mathematics to solve outstanding real world problems.

First Zakir Husain award was given to late Professor J.N.Kapur,a distinguished Industrial and Applied Mathematician who played a vital role in promoting teaching and research of Applied Mathematics in Indian.The second Zakir Husain award was given to Professor Helmut Neunzert of Germay by HRD Minister Goverment of India,Shri Arjun Singh on 4th Dec.2004 at a function,India Habitat Centre New Delhi.Prof.Neunzert is well known through out the world for his valuable work in the field of Industrial Mathematics.Besides this he has trained a fairly large number of Indians in this field.Third award was presented on 31, March2007 to Prof. K. R. Srinivasan, Director, Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoritical Physics, Triete, Italy by Lt. General (retd.) Mr. Sinha. Prof. Roddam Narasimha, FRS, has been awarded Zakir Husain Award for the year 2007.

Prof H. P. Dikshit, Director, Good Governance & Planning, govt. of MP, has been awarded Zakir Husain Award for the year 2008.
